July 10, 2012
Article

The Jewish Day School Social Media Academy is an intensive program designed to help Jewish Day Schools advance their strategic use of social media in areas such as communication, marketing, community building, alumni relations and development.

The full Academy runs throughout the 2012-13 academic year, and includes live events, online training via webinar, and private coaching and consulting for each school. We've selected a cohort of 20 schools to matriculate through an intensive training, coaching and project-based curriculum during the 2012-13 academic year.

Getting Over the Content Hurdle
May 17, 2013
Blog Post

In the winter of 2011 Carmel Academy underwent a name change, as well as a rigorous and successful accreditation process. The name change, in particular, was a unique experience – one that required a great deal of forethought, leadership, careful planning and implementation. With a new branding campaign, a stellar accreditation report and the excitement that electrified our school community, we embraced this as an opportunity to also become part of the social media landscape. Coinciding with our new name and look, Carmel launched four social media platforms: a newly redesigned and robust

Surprisingly Easy to Quit My Synagogue
March 13, 2013
Blog Post
This blog is crossed posted from Living Lomed.

I belonged to a synagogue for twenty years. This year we made the decision not to rejoin. The reason? I was feeling less connected to a place that was putting control over choice. Concretely: Leadership would not permit the Shabbat morning prayer class I had attended for the past eight years to continue on a weekly basis. We could hold the class twice a month, but not every week.

A Post-P.O.S.T. Post - Strategic Thinking Case Study
February 21, 2013
Blog Post

This blog post is a reflection on something that hasn’t happened yet.  Whoa.

The reason I can do this is because of the remarkable opportunity I currently have as the Network Weaver for a project of The Jewish Theological Seminary’s William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education called “ReFrame.” And because I decided to use the POST model for my network weaving and marketing plan.

Network Weaving is Like Starting a Band
December 20, 2012

All this talk about ‘developing a network’ and ‘organizational change for the connected age’ can feel both daunting and vague. But really, it’s just like starting a band! (And you’ve always wanted to be a rock star, right?) Here’s how it works in five easy steps.

Vision and Data: Essential Building Blocks for Successful Synagogue Change
October 10, 2012
Blog Post

UJA Federation of New York has recently made investments in helping local congregations collect and analyze data in order to make strategic, data-driven decisions about their work and their future.  The results of the project have been extraordinary, ranging from leaders learning how they need to collect different kinds of data, to learning how to use databases for more than contact management, as well as how they can shape their programs and culture to build a sustainable future.

Your List is Not a Network
September 24, 2012
Blog Post

Part of the Connected Congregations series

Point of clarification: your list is not a network.

I sometimes hear organizations talking about the number of people they have involved with their work - their network - and then reference the people who have signed up to receive their email updates. That’s great! It’s wonderful that so many people are interested enough in your work and the difference that you’re making that they signed up to get your communications. That can be really important and powerful. It’s just not (necessarily) a network.

This is cross-posted from Miriam Brosseau's "Clips and Phrases" Tumbler.

Here’s the current state of a conversation about social media and Jewish values happening on my Facebook profile. What would you add?

Ok, everybody - favorite Jewish values and/or texts that could potentially relate to social media. And…go!

(Whaddya think, Anita Salzman Silvert, David Paskin, Rabbi Jason Miller, Elizabeth Wood, Carrie Bornstein, Arnie Samlan? Others?)

P.O.S.T. Planning Worksheet
May 18, 2012
Article

Inspired by the book Groundswell by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff, Darim has developed the POST Planning Worksheet.  POST stands for PEOPLE, OBJECTIVES, STRATEGY and TECHNOLOGY.  While many jump into social media thinking "Oh, Twitter is the latest hot thing, we should be doing THAT", to use the tool successfully to meet your goals takes a bit more thought.   Creating a plan can be an indepth and complex process, or can be on the back of a napkin.  Either way, asking the right questions in the right order is incredibly helpful.

The Four Steps In The Learning Journey
April 30, 2012
Blog Post

brain gearsHow to utilize social media, in today’s world of work, can be quite overwhelming to the average brain. Things have changed so rapidly with how we communicate, both in and outside of the workplace, that our brains are simply overwhelmed with new data. This rapid societal change has literally turned our work worlds upside down. Neuroscientists have found that the brain must go through four sequential steps, when trying to learn anything new, so it can properly transition itself to a higher functioning level.

And We Gather Again at #12NTC
April 30, 2012
Blog Post

12ntclogoThe Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) hosts a phenomenal conference every year -- the NTC. Attracting professionals, and lay leaders, from organizations both big and small (actually humongous international orgs as well as tiny local operations), from executive directors to IT staff and program professionals, it is a cornucopia of ideas, tools, strategies and do-gooding-ness. I go because I value the exposure to the best, brightness and most creative people in the field.

A Skinny Book. Buy 12 Copies.
March 27, 2012
Blog Post

tstRabbi Hayim Herring (of STAR: Synagogues Transformation and Renewal) and the visionary behind Synaplex) has recently published a new book: Tomorrow's Synagogue Today. You should read it, and buy a copy for the senior staff and every board member of your synagogue. Here's the link. Go take care of business and then come back and keep reading. OK, now that the box is on its way, I'll explain why you should read -- and share -- this book. First, Rabbi Herring gets it.

Social Media: The Illuminated Megillah
March 09, 2012
Blog Post

There’s a lot of buzz about the increasingly image-driven nature of social media. At the forefront of this discussion is the latest hot social network, Pinterest. But it’s not only this virtual pinboard. Everywhere you look, memes are being generated to better marry words and pictures, kinetic typography videos are turning letters into animations, and infographics illuminate otherwise meaningless statistics. Pictures are the most highly engaged content on Facebook. Where is all this coming from?
