Determining Your Communal DNA
November 30, 2012
Blog Post

What is a synagogue? A congregation? A community?

We are more than a nonprofit organization, or a local center, or a collection of people who share certain practices or get together for holidays. It feels significant to me that words like “congregation” and “community” are grammatically singular but inherently refer to a multiplicity. The duality of meaning here is so critical for how we lead, congregate, and self-identify.

Getting to Know You
November 27, 2012
Blog Post

It's the start of a new Religious School year and you want to do something to start the year with a bang. It would be good to find a way to help parents and children meet the teachers right away. And it's always nice to use new technology to show that the synagogue is moving with the times. These were some of the aims as we embarked on a new project at The Community Synagogue.

Becoming the Leader of a Networked Nonprofit: The Jewish Enrichment Center
July 19, 2012
Blog Post

Right before Thanksgiving, Caren Levine (Darim’s Learning Network lady extraordinaire) suggested that I write a blog post about how we think about out work at the Jewish Enrichment Center as a networked nonprofit. We are not a networked nonprofit, I thought. At least not yet. But now, months later, I can see that we’ve come a long way.

Social Media: The Illuminated Megillah
March 09, 2012
Blog Post

There’s a lot of buzz about the increasingly image-driven nature of social media. At the forefront of this discussion is the latest hot social network, Pinterest. But it’s not only this virtual pinboard. Everywhere you look, memes are being generated to better marry words and pictures, kinetic typography videos are turning letters into animations, and infographics illuminate otherwise meaningless statistics. Pictures are the most highly engaged content on Facebook. Where is all this coming from?

Free Agents: Insights from #TakeBackThePink
February 27, 2012
Blog Post

I had pre-ordered Beth Kanter and Allison Fine's book, The Networked Nonprofit, and read it within 48 hours of it arriving on my doorsteps. Yet I am amazed by how what I learned from it continues to mature over time, rather than become outdated or irrelevant. Like a good wine or well aged cheese, it just keeps getting better. Of particular interest to me lately is the concept -- and value-- of free agents.

The Emerging Field of Network Weavers
February 27, 2012
Blog Post

After in-depth conversations with around 30 network-weavers in the Jewish world as part of my Network-Weaver Series, I have seen that there are a lot of really passionate people building networks that are quite impressive – and the term “network-weaving” resonates with many of them quite deeply. It puts a descriptive word to what they do in connecting others toward a greater cause; and more importantly, it acknowledges that they are not alone in doing it.

Myers Briggs for Network Weavers
February 27, 2012
Blog Post

Networks and network weavers are quickly becoming the hottest terms in Jewish life (and elsewhere). Deborah Fishman’s been doing a series of interviews with ‘network weavers’ on eJewishPhilanthropy, The AVI CHAI Foundation, The Schusterman Foundation, The Jim Joseph Foundation and others have been making big investments in not only developing their own network strategies, but also in help their grantees and fields of interest start to work in more networked ways.

An Old-Fashioned Writer, Writing in the New Digital World
November 15, 2011
Blog Post

A relative, 10 years after beginning his Ph.D. thesis, still hadn’t finished. Couldn’t get it just right. Knew it would be scrutinized. Wanted to make it right; didn’t want to be caught in imprecision, or worse yet, error. 10 years. Not finished.

Two years ago I had a similar problem. Trained as a lawyer, being a publisher and editor, I live in a world of words. They’re important; they’re permanent. I am accountable for what I write, and for what my company publishes. Words will endure. They need to stand on their own, be thorough, be accurate, be complete.

Pro-Sumers: New Rules For The Jewish Future
November 15, 2011
Blog Post

This week I was at the Jewish Federations of North America's General Assembly in Denver. Embedded in the event was The Jewish Futures Conference, which featured the work of several exceptional leaders in the Jewish community, as well as creative ideas submitted to the organizers, and teens sharing their ideas and projects. The following are my remarks, which opened the afternoon to set the context for presenters such as Chris Lehmann and Tiffany Shlain.

Millennial Generation & The M-Factor
November 15, 2011

imagesAs a twenty-year old, it is interesting to read a book about “my generation” aka the Millennials. The Millennials were born between 1982 and 2000—“sometimes called Generation Y, GenNext, the Google Generation, the Echo Boom, or even the Tech generation—are 76 million strong and compose the fastest-growing segment of workers today” (Lancaster & Stillman 5).

What Have We Learned This Week? This Year?
October 03, 2011
Blog Post

Guest post by Rabbi Arnie Samlan

When I joined Facebook, the first updates I began to post daily balanced my work and my play. They bounced between humorous (most often) and serious. Some reflected my rabbinic side; some addressed my musical (and scratch DJ) side; many dealt with pop music or pop culture. After a few months, I figured out that social media is not about listening to myself, it’s about bringing people together to share.

#SM4NP Wrap-Up: Uncomfortable Transparency and Practical Optimism
September 07, 2011
Blog Post

This year's Social Media for Nonprofits conference in New York wasn't actually about social media.* It was about values and personality. Two ideas in particular stood out - uncomfortable transparency and practical optimism. Here's how they came through...

Uncomfortable Transparency:

On charity:water’s fourth birthday, the young nonprofit celebrated by live-streaming an ambitious new drilling project…and failed.

Educators as Accidental Techies
September 07, 2011
Blog Post

Several years ago during a conversation with Harlene Appelman of The Covenant Foundation, I learned an important term: The Positive Deviant. Harlene uses this term (and now so do I) to describe those people who are doing things in new and different ways, perhaps disrupting systems and organizations from the inside out in good, productive, and important ways. They are the people who are worthy of cheerleading and supporting because they are making change on the ground, and their work will -- in time -- impact many people. In the field of nonprofit technology, we have another term for these sorts of folks: The Accidental Techie.

The Discomfort of Learning
September 07, 2011
Blog Post

My 7 year old son has been learning how to ride a 2 wheel bike. Over the past several weeks his attitude has shifted from excitement to intimidation to frustration to despondence and back again. He got in a bad mood when we suggested practicing, blamed the bike for malfunctioning, and claimed a slightly skinned knee prevented him from any further effort. At one point he screamed, "I quit!", which prompted our older neighbor (rocking on her porch swing) to call out, "No, Eli, never give up! You'll get it!".

“The Four Children” as Developmental Stages of Technology Leadership: Reflections from the Avi Chai Technology Academy
September 06, 2011

(Cross posted from a guest post on the Avi Chai Foundation blog) And… They’re off! As you may have heard, the Avi Chai Foundation has gathered a diverse cohort of New York and New Jersey Day Schools to learn about social media tools and strategies, and to support them in developing their own “experiments” to develop their networks, engage with parents and alumni, and ramp up development efforts over the next several months.
